- The Power of Books (Vol.2)

The new book in a series about three exiled women after the Second World War

Germany, 1939: Conditions in Germany are becoming intolerable, and Maria and her family, who are Jewish, make the decision to flee at the last minute. But by now it is almost impossible to leave the country safely, and the family are forced to leave by a dangerous route.

Brazil, 2023: Sandra runs a bookshop started by her grandmother Maria. When she is contacted by a woman named June from New York, who tells her about an inheritance, Sandra becomes curious about her grandmother’s story. She asks June to join her in retracing the route Maria travelled as a refugee, in order to hopefully find out more about Maria and discover the whereabouts of Anni, a friend of Maria and June’s grandmother Luise. Together the women follow in Maria’s footsteps – and in the process they learn more about their shared history and about themselves.

A captivating saga about two generations, three families and three continents

What did it mean for women to build a new life in a foreign country between 1940 and 1950?
